Description: Officer Johnston was killed in an automobile accident on U.S. Route 220. Officer Johnston was returning to police headquarters in Martinsville when the steering column in the 1940 Ford V-8 patrol car failed. Officer Johnston lost control of the vehicle as it went down an embankment and struck a tree. Officer Johnston was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
