Description: Deputy Sheriff James was fatally shot by a soldier who mistakenly assumed that the deputy was about to arrest him because of his AWOL status. Deputy James actually was on the lookout for a burglar responsible for a series of thefts in the area and approached the soldier to question him. When Deputy James identified himself as an officer of the law, the soldier pulled a revolver and shot him. Deputy James was transported to his residence and a doctor was summoned. Deputy James died of his injuries later that evening. The soldier was arrested.
