Description: Correctional Officer Johnson was assaulted and killed by two inmates who were attempting to escape from the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. The two inmates attacked Officer Johnson with a metal rod and took his uniform, radio, and cell phone. The inmates attempted to escape through the truck entrance of the penitentiary but were stopped at the gate and apprehended. A second officer was also wounded but survived. Officer Johnson was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
