Description: Chief Keller was shot as he searched for two suspects wanted for a series of robberies in the vicinity. Chief Keller received a call that two holdup men were seen at the railroad tracks. Chief Keller and Officer Rippey located two men and ordered them to put up their hands. The men opened fire and fatally shot Chief Keller in the chest. The men were not the robbers but rather were two citizens who were also looking for the robbers and wanted to help the police find them. The coroners inquest ruled the death as accidental and a case of mistaken identity.
