Description: Chief Kirwin was attacked and struck in the head with an axe as he attempted to arrest a suspect. Chief Kirwin and Officer John Sterling went to a barn to arrest the suspect after being notified that he had attacked a man with an axe. When the officers entered the barn they were attacked by the man wielding an axe. Officer Sterling fatally shot the suspect. Chief Kirwin suffered a fractured skull and was rendered an invalid until his death six years later.
