Description: Patrolman Kirkham was killed when a chain bridge collapsed into the James River. Patrolman Kirkham was overseeing the procession of over 300 people who were about to cross the 50 foot suspension bridge leading from KitchenŸ??s Island to VauxhallŸ??s Island. Approximately 60 people were crossing the bridge when it buckled under the weight and collapsed into the river. Patrolman Kirkham died at the scene of severe head injuries. Two other people died in the accident and several more were injured.
