Description: Special Deputy Marshal Kelly, Deputy Marshal Mark Kuykendall and Deputy Marshal Henry Smith were killed when they were assaulted by a prisoner wielding an axe. The three deputy marshals were left in charge of a prisoner while the Marshal went into Eufaula, Oklahoma on business. The Marshal returned to find that the deputy marshals had been attacked with an axe and Deputy Marshal Kelly had also been shot. The Marshal hunted the suspect down and rearrested him. The suspect was convicted of murder and executed by hanging on October 7, 1887.
