Description: Guard Leonard succumbed to head injuries sustained a week earlier when he was assaulted during an escape attempt at Convict Road Camp # 6 in Scott County, Virginia. Three inmates attacked Guard Leonard and Foreman Charlie Branson with a pipe. Guard Leonard was taken to the hospital where he died a week later of a fractured skull. Foreman Branson survived the assault. Guard Leonard's assailant was captured two years later, convicted of murder and executed in the electric chair.
