Description: Chief Leyden was killed in an explosion while he was on the docks talking with a freight foreman on Black Tom island in New York. A barge loaded with explosives caught on fire and set off a series of explosions, the force of which was felt in five states. Chief Leyden's body was found under the debris the next day. Patrolman James Doherty was also killed in the blast.
