Description: Officer Lathrem was killed when a group of inmates from the Charlotte Correctional Facility tried to escape. Officer Lathrem was supervising a group of inmates when the escape attempt occurred. Officer Lathrem was beaten with a sledge hammer as the prisoners carried out their escape plan. The inmates were later apprehended by prison guards. Officer Lathrem was pronounced dead at the scene.
