Description: Marshal Lewis attempted to apprehend a 17 year old wanted for shooting two Denver Police Officers. The suspect opened fire, killing Marshal Lewis immediately. The suspect was subdued by onlookers. Enraged by Marshal Lewis? death, the crowd dragged the suspect across the street to the courthouse lawn and prepared to hang him from a tree. Undersheriff Duncan Lowell arrived just in time and took custody of the suspect. The suspect was convicted, received a life sentence and eventually died in a prison knife fight.
