Description: Jailer Lucas was shot while protecting the jail from a mob attempting to remove an inmate from the jail to hang him. Jailer Lucas refused to give up the keys and a gunfight ensued. Jailer Lucas was shot in the chest and died several hours later. The mob overpowered Jailer Lucas's wife, took the keys, removed the prisoner and lynched him.
