Description: Deputies Mills, W. E. Owenby and Constable Granville Tallent were en route to serve an arrest warrant on two citizens. The officers noticed a car that was weaving down the highway at a high rate of speed and decided to stop the vehicle. When Deputy Mills and Deputy Owenby exited their patrol car they were struck by an oncoming vehicle. Constable Granville drove both officers to the local doctor for treatment. Deputy Mills died approximately two weeks later from the injuries he sustained to his chest and neck. Deputy Owenby recovered from his injuries. The driver that struck the two officers was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
