Description: Sergeant McDonnell sustained multiple head and neck injuries when a bomb exploded at the Haight-Ashbury district police station. A pipe bomb was constructed using industrial staples and other metal as shrapnel and placed in a box on the windowsill at the station. The bomb was similar to one which exploded in the parking lot at the Berkeley station four days prior where six officers were injured. Sergeant McDonnell was transported to the hospital where he died two days later. Nine other officers were also wounded in this incident.
