Description: Detective McCarthy was working undercover with a dairy deliveryman to solve a series of early morning burglaries. Detective McCarty spotted a suspicious man lurking about and arrested him. While waiting for the patrol wagon to arrive, the suspect asked for permission to sit, which was granted. The suspect sat down in order to pull a .32 caliber handgun from his shoe and shoot Detective McCarthy in the chest. The suspect exchanged shots with the officers arriving in the patrol car and escaped. Detective McCarthy died at the scene.
