Description: Sergeant McLaughlin and Deputy Duncan MacDonald were attempting to break up a family disturbance. The suspect drew a semi-automatic pistol gun from his waistband and opened fire on the officers. Deputy MacDonald was struck in the side through an opening in his bulletproof vest and dropped to the floor. Sergeant McLaughlin was hit twice in the chest, once in the arm and once in the leg. Despite his injuries, Deputy MacDonald was able to shoot the suspect, fatally wounding him. Sergeant McLaughlin was taken to Denver General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
