Description: Deputy Maples was returning to camp in Tahlequah, Oklahoma where he and his posse were attempting to serve a warrant when he was shot from ambush. Deputy Maples fired four shots at his attacker as he fell, missing him. Deputy Maples died the next morning. It was believed that outlaw Ned Christie was Deputy Maples? killer but thirty years later an eyewitness revealed that the killer was Bud Trainor. Ned Christie was pursued by lawmen for five years before being killed by U.S. Marshals in a standoff in 1892. Bud Trainor was murdered in 1896 and never charged with the crime.
