Description: Lieutenant Mansfield and the Chief of Police, Chief White, had arrested a man named "Preacher" Newman. Lieutenant Mansfield was seated in the back seat of the police car with Newman, as he was being transported to the city jail. Newman, who had not been searched, and had been drinking heavily, pulled a gun and started firing. The officers returned fire. Chief White was grazed, but Lieutenant Mansfield was mortally wounded.
