Description: Sheriff McFarlane and Undersheriff Edward Goodfellow arrested two suspects on a charge of stealing Army blankets. After making the arrests, the two officers and two suspects all proceeded back to town. When Undersheriff Goodfellow, was driving the patrol car, shifted gears to back up, his foot slipped off the clutch and the car plunged over a 100 foot embankment into a creek. Sheriff McFarlane died instantly. Undersheriff Goodfellow died the following day of hypostatic pneumonia and a punctured lung. One of the two suspects also died.
