Description: Sergeant Mathews and Private Steven Pyles, of the 515th Military Police Company, were struck by a federal vehicle after completing a perimeter check of the ammunition dump at Fort Lee, Virginia. Sergeant Mathews and Private Pyles were participating in a search for two escaped inmates from a federal reformatory adjoining Fort Lee. Sergeant Mathews and Private Pyles were struck by a vehicle that was transporting one of the escaped inmates back to the reformatory. Sergeant Mathews was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Privates Pyles survived his injuries. The investigation concluded that the headlights of an oncoming vehicle prevented the driver of the reformatory vehicle from seeing the military police officers. Friendly action.
