Description: Sheriff Mercer was returning from Tahoka with a prisoner when a northbound truck suddenly turned left, causing Sheriff Mercer to swerve to avoid hitting the truck. This caused Sheriff Mercer to crash head-on into an oncoming car. Sheriff Mercer died of his injuries two days later. The prisoner also died.
