Description: Deputy Sheriff Mount and City Marshal William Patton were ambushed and shot as they stood in the town square. Marshal Patton had received threats from relatives of a man he had shot and killed while making an arrest several months prior. Marshal Patton had been tried in a court of law and acquitted of all charges due to justifiable homicide. Marshal Patton and Deputy Mount were shot several times and died at the scene. Despite a large reward offered by Governor Churchill, their assassin was not apprehended.
