Description: Officer Martinez and his partner Officer James Szabo were clearing debris obstructing the San Bernardino Freeway when a vehicle pulled alongside the two officers and the occupants opened fire at point-blank range. Officer Martinez was fatally wounded and died the next day. Officer Szabo, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was wounded but recovered. The suspect killed Salt Lake Police Officer Ronald Heaps two months later in a shoot-out.
