Description: On September 28, 1913, Sergeant McNierney was stabbed when he intervened to protect two girls who were being harassed on the train. Sergeant McNierney and Patrolman William Deneen were off-duty and were riding the train to the theater when they witnessed two men making unwelcome advances towards the girls. When the officers placed themselves between the girls and the two men, a confrontation ensued. One of the men pulled a knife and stabbed both officers. The officers were transported to the hospital where Sergeant McNierney died of his injuries five days later. Patrolman Deneen survived his injuries. Their assailant was convicted of the murder and sentenced to 10-19 years in prison.
