Description: On November 1, 1908, Superintendent Martin fell from the stairs and broke his femur in two places as he attempted to turn off a gas jet at the Rahway Reformatory. The gas light fixture had become frozen and the gas had to be turned off manually to prevent a hazardous malfunction. Superintendent Martin was bedridden until his death 12 days later.
