Description: Sheriff Mitchell was severely injured at the rail yard as he was returning from transporting prisoners to the state penitentiary. Sheriff Mitchell attempted to jump onto the connecting train which had already started to leave the station. Sheriff Mitchell fell under the train's wheels and his left leg was crushed. Sheriff Mitchell's leg was amputated by a doctor that same day but he died later that evening.
