Description: Special Deputy Marshal Beck and Special Marshal Lewis Merritt were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect for whiskey violations. The marshals found the man in a corn field in Muskogee County, Indian Territory (current-day Oklahoma) and as the men attempted to arrest the suspect and other violators a gun-battle began. Special Marshal Lewis and his fellow marshal were fatally wounded.
