Description: Deputy Marshal Mitchell was shot and killed while transporting a prisoner to jail in Pickens County, South Carolina. Marshal Mitchell and a fellow marshal arrested the suspect at an illegal still but were ambushed by other distillers as they returned to town. The two were able to make it back to town where Marshal Mitchell succumbed to his wounds.
