Description: On April 20, 1981, Police Officer Martin was attacked and beaten with his own nightstick when he roused a man who was sleeping on the subway platform. Officer Martin sustained major injuries to his head and abdomen. Over the next 25 years, Officer Martin required at least 20 surgeries and was under constant rehabilitative care. Officer Martin died from complications of his original injuries on April 9, 2011.
