Description: Special Agent Merrifield drowned as he attempted to cross the Mississippi River to continue his patrol. Agent Merrifield and two other railroad employees boarded a skiff and were halfway across the river when the boat began to leak and sink. Agent Merrifield drowned. The other two men were able to swim to safety.
