Description: Auxiliary Police Officer Mortimer suffered a heart attack while directing heavy traffic near the scene of a raging four-block fire. Officer Mortimer was transported to the hospital where he died later that evening. The fire started at approximately at 11:45 a.m. and swept through four blocks destroying or damaging 22 homes, three school buildings and shops. Over 200 firefighters fought the blaze for three hours which caused an estimated $1 million in damages. Sixty families evacuated their homes and over 100 people were left homeless.
