Description: Deputy Sheriff Murphy, Chief R.B. Watson and Deputy Elbert Samples were shot as they attempted to arrest two hobos who were illegally riding on the L & N passenger train. The officers were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds to the abdomen. Deputy Murphy died of peritonitis three days later. Deputy Samples and Chief Watson recovered from their injuries. The shooter was convicted of murder but his death sentence was commuted by the Governor to life in prison.
