Description: On June 14, 1953, Patrolman Murphy was shot by a motorist he had stopped for questioning. The driver, thinking he was about to be arrested for the robbery he had just committed, opened fire, striking Patrolman Murphy in the shoulder. Patrolman Murphy pursued the suspect into Hudson where the suspect shot and killed Hudson Officer Clarence Erickson. During surgery to his injured shoulder, Patrolman Murphy suffered a stroke and was in ill health ever since. He was admitted to the hospital for six weeks in August and September of 1955. Patrolman Murphy died of a heart attack on September 22, 1955.
