Description: Sheriff Maxwell, of the Washington District, was ambushed and shot multiple times as he crossed the Saluda River shoals while on his way to court. Sheriff Maxwell died of his injuries two days later. The Washington District was comprised of Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.
