Description: Corporal Mapes was shot by a suspect he had stopped for a traffic violation. The suspect, a bootlegger who was transporting a shipment of liquor, attempted to bribe Corporal Mapes who refused. Corporal Mapes was shot in the chest and died at the scene. The suspect was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
