Description: Guard McCullough was shot by an inmate when he responded to investigate the sounds of shots fired. Guard Walter Hastings was providing the inmates at the Newcastle County (DE) facility with breakfast and opened one of the cell doors. The inmate struck Guard Hastings over the head, gained control of his service weapon and shot him twice. Guard McCullough came running to the scene and was shot in the abdomen by the inmate. Responding guards subdued the suspect and placed him in restraints. Guard Hastings survived the incident. Guard McCullough died of his injuries three days later.
