Description: Deputy Sheriffs Manderich, J. Douglas Hulsey and a third man were shot as they attempted to search an underground mine to arrest the suspect wanted for the murder of Chief J.W. Grant, Deputy Nephi Jensen and Deputy Otto Witbeck eight days prior. Deputy Manderich and Hulsey were preparing to light smudge fires in the coal mine when they were fatally shot. The suspect escaped the mine and was not apprehended until 1921 when he was killed by the Texas Rangers.
