Description: Deputy Mendina and Lieutenant William Scherzer were struck by a drunk driver as they stood by the side of the road. The lawmen were trying to rouse two men who were sleeping in a car when they were struck. Deputy Mendina died at the hospital of multiple injuries. Lieutenant Scherzer survived his injuries. The driver was charged with manslaughter.
