Description: Patrolman Wilbert McMicken and Sheriff Hughes Van Etten were shot as they attempted to arrest a suspect wanted for forging and cashing stolen checks. When the lawmen arrived at the residence of the suspect and demanded entrance, they were refused. As they attempted to force the door open, shots were fired through the door from inside . Both Patrolman McMicken and Sheriff Van Etten were shot in the leg. The lawmen were transported to the hospital where Patrolman McMicken died the following day. Sheriff Van Etten died 11 days later. A posse was formed to capture the two suspects. One suspect was shot to death by the posse. The second suspect turned himself in and was convicted of murder.
