Description: Deputy Maxwell and Ranger Carlos Tafolla were killed while attempting to arrest members of the "Bill Smith Gang," a notorious band of horse thieves. Deputy Maxwell was shot in the head and died at the scene. Ranger Tafolla was shot twice in the abdomen and died later that night. The thieves escaped.
