Description: Attempting other arrest (excludes burglary, robbery and drug-related arrests). Detective Mertz and four other officers traveled to a neighboring town to arrest a suspect wanted for murder. As they approached the house, the suspect began shooting through the front door before escaping through the back door. Officer Higgins and Detective Wendel were wounded in this incident. Detective Mertz and Detective Robert Shannon were shot fatally and pronounced dead at the scene.
