Description: Sheriff Newman died due to complications stemming from injuries sustained years earlier during an ambush attack when he was shot in the spine. On January 28, 1891, Sheriff Newman testified against two men in court, and while the men were out on bond they shot him in the back. Four of the shots struck Sheriff Newman in the torso and one struck him in the spine, paralyzing him. Sheriff Newman succumbed to the injuries on December 30, 1914. His death was blamed on the wounds which had failed to heal properly.
