Description: On June 14, 1924, Deputy Marshal Nelson and Marshal Arthur Lunsford were shot as they attempted to question a trio of robbery suspects. Deputy Nelson was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the spine which caused paralysis from the waist down. Deputy Nelson remained at the hospital until his death seven weeks later on August 1, 1924. Marshal Lunsford recovered from his injuries. Two of the suspects were killed in a shootout during another robbery attempt. The third suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
