Description: Chief Nelson was investigating the theft of several cases of shoes from a rail car when he observed the suspects in a transaction involving the stolen merchandise. As Chief Nelson attempted to make an arrest, one of the suspects shot him four times. Chief Nelson returned fire, killing one of the suspects. The second suspect was arrested shortly after. Chief Nelson fought for his life but succumbed to his injuries six days later.
