Description: Correctional Officer Nicholas was fatally shot by an inmate at the Cook County jail. Officer Nicholas was transferring the inmate from his cell to the infirmary when the inmate drew a smuggled handgun and shot Officer Nicholas three times. The inmate was under arrest for the murder of Cicero Patrolman John Nerad (Panel 29-E: 18) and was awaiting trial. The inmate turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
