Description: Deputy Nalty and Granite City Patrolman Ross Johnson approached three known gangsters in front of the Newman hotel to question them regarding a robbery that had occurred earlier. The suspects drew their weapons and fired, striking Deputy Nalty over the heart. Patrolman Johnson was also shot but his injuries were not fatal. The suspects fled the scene but were caught shortly afterwards.
