Description: Marshal Normand was on a stakeout with Township Constable Henry Purrier at a shop that had been burglarized several days prior. Shortly after midnight, the suspects did return and were caught in the act. Marshal Normand, riding on the running boards of the suspect's car, instructed the driver to head towards the city jail. Constable Purrier followed in his own vehicle. One of the men shot Marshal Normand, killing him instantly. Constable Purrier pulled his own car along side of the suspects and opened fire. The suspects returned fire, striking Constable Purrier three times in the chest. As the suspects fled, Constable Purrier continued to fire, wounding the driver. Badly wounded, Constable Purrier was able to drive to the hospital where he was treated. Marshal Normand?s assailant was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. The other two suspects were convicted of manslaughter, served jail time then paroled.
