Description: Sheriff Orcutt was shot in an exchange of gunfire as he attempted to stop two suspects who were attempting to break into the prison to release several prisoners. Sheriff Orcutt died of his injuries a week later on December 12, 1867. One of the suspects was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison. The second suspect was convicted of a separate crime and sentenced to forty years.
