Description: A posse of officers and two detachments of U.S. Cavalry troops were dispatched to intercept a group of 19 men believed to be smuggling arms and ammunition from the U.S. into Mexico. Two Dimmit County deputies, Ortiz and Buck, were captured when they ran out of ammunition following a gun battle with the smugglers. Deputy Ortiz was shot and killed when he became exhausted from being forced to carry a heavy load of supplies for the smugglers. Deputy Buck was beaten and later released after the smugglers were surrounded by the posse.
