Description: Deputy Sheriff Owen and Sheriff Robert Smith had arrested suspect on theft charges. While en route to the county jail, the suspect produced a handgun which was hidden in his clothing, and shot Sheriff Smith in the back of his head. Deputy Owen was shot and killed when he jumped from the running board of the police car.
